Bronzed Beauty

Time to go to Barbados!
Well not really. I wish. That’s just what my girlfriends and I say when it’s time to go and get spray tanned. Even in the dead of winter I will have a subtle glow. You would think being French and Native American that I wouldn’t naturally be the color of Elmer’s Glue but I am. I do lay out in the sun in the summer but with a SPF 30 with a yummy smelling SPF 4 over it just because I love the smell. I don’t do tanning beds. I have, but honestly, I would have to spend so much time in one that I would risk cooking my insides or with skin cancer like my mother did. No thanks, I’ll pass. I don’t judge people for being sun worshipers, or tanning bed junkies but for me, I’m an avid sunless tanner.

Gone are the days of looking like an Oompa Loompa from using sunless tanning lotion. I know non users have that fear. Achieving a perfect golden sunless tan is easy. There are different options on how to get bronzed and they all come at different price points too. It does take a little practice and little prep work but it’s worth the outcome.

Options…
Sunless tanner comes in lotion, mousse, gel, aerosol versions and even pre-coated mitts you wear. They all have pros and cons. It’s personal preference.
You can also go and get a professional spray tan. That comes by way of standing in a booth or paying someone to airbrush you by hand. Now even though that may seem invasive, you get a perfect tan that way and a good one will even be able to accent your muscles (or hell, create them) to give you a customized result. Six pack abs anyone?!

Some of my favorite products:
L’Oreal Sublime $9 (any drugstore or department store)
Toma’s Tan Perfect $13.99 (Sally Beauty Supply - cheaper with card)
Moroccan Mineral Dark Tan $26 (Amazon - worth EVERY penny & smells AMAZING)
St. Tropez $40 (Sephora - also worth EVERY penny)
I like the less expensive ones. They work really well. My preference is for the pricey ones when I am willing to spend  the money. The color is phenomenal and the tan seems to last longer but more importantly, it fades without making you have “lizard” skin.
I would say as a beginner, definitely choose one that is tinted so that you can see where it goes. Don't be scared if you're the color of chocolate pudding. Your tan won't look like that and it washes off. Once you’re experienced, you don’t really need the tint.

How to get your glow on…
What you need:
Exfoliating scrub
Rubber/latex gloves
Moisturizer
Sunless tanner
Hydrogen peroxide
Cotton balls

Steps:
(For aerosol, spray from your feet working up to your head. Skip to Step 11.)
1. Take a shower and scrub with the exfoliating scrub making sure to get your heels, knees, elbows and any other dry skin areas. (It's not a bad idea to moisturize for a few days prior to either.)
2. Towel dry.

3. Put a light layer of moisturizer on your heels, knees and elbows.
4. Put on rubber gloves. Also make sure you are doing this in an area like your bathroom where cleanup will be easy if you drop any. If using aerosol, do it in the shower and rinse the shower out after.
5. My method for applying is in circular motions. You don’t want to rub so much that you rub it off. Make sure you rub it on to get even coverage and then move on. It doesn’t have to disappear completely as you rub.
6. I start with my calves/knees, working down to my feet. Go a little lighter on your feet, grazing over your toes. Don't go heavy on your knees, use the same light touch as you would your feet.
7. Thighs and bum next working your way up to your neck and then your face. I tend to save my arms for last because they  rub against the rest of my body applying so I don’t want to mess them up.
8. They do make specific tanners for your face, I just use the same one all over.
9. If you aren’t a contortionist, your back may be hard. A good tip is using a sponge paint brush to reach your back or enlist a helper.
10. Once you do your arms, it’s time for your hands but you have a little clean up first.
11.  Hydrogen peroxide works great to correct mistakes and to remove the excess from dry skin areas. I also put a little on a cotton ball, rub it across my heels, knees and elbows. I kind of tap it over my toes and across where my wrist meets my hand. Also, I tend to wipe my armpits too. How often does the sun tan your armpits?
12. Take your gloves off. It’s time for your hands. I put a small amount of tanner on a cotton ball and dab it lightly on the top of my hands and fingers.
13. Now you just need to wait until you are dry to get dressed. Preferably loose, dark clothing. I tend to do mine right before bed. Try not to sweat or get wet for at least 4 hours. You can shower after that to remove the tint.

Your tan, depending on what product you use should last a few days. Normally I do it a few nights in a row and then just a maintenance coat every few days. The BIGGEST thing to remember once your tan is applied is to moisturize each day. It will make your tan look nicer and last better. Sometimes I will use one of those moisturizers that has a built-in gradual tanner to keep my tan even.
Now go get bronzed! Your friends and family will think you took a mini vacay. Have a tropical drink while you dry and just tell them you went to Barbados! Even if it was only a mental vacation! ;)

Saturday Morning Makeover!

One of my favorite ways to start the day is always with a good cup of coffee and a trip to Target! Today was a little more fun than my normal Saturday morning shopping trip for a few reasons. I was being joined by my beautiful friends Kylah and Karen.

Karen is one of my beautiful friends, who until today, only ever wore mascara. WHAT?!?! HOW?!?! I mean honestly though, she's gorgeous without a stitch of makeup. Karen works with Kylah and had noticed that recently Kylah was looking a little different. Here's why...

About a month ago I introduced the lovely Kylah to the world of makeup. She too, a natural beauty like Karen had never really worn it, didn't know how to buy it or apply it. I love hearing that! My ears instantly perk up and I automatically go into makeover mode. Not because I think everyone needs makeup but because it's fun to take a blank canvas and turn it into a beautiful piece of artwork. I love to teach my friends how to do this and show them how to enhance their natural beauty. Now that Kylah is a month in, I think she has more makeup than me and she's loving all of the options she now has.

So armed with coffee and coupons (thanks to Kylah the Coupon Queen) we headed to the health and beauty aisles at Target. We started with primer and worked our way to fake eyelashes and brushes. Of course we searched for deals and used coupons as much as we could. Beauty on a budget girls! (E.L.F. brand rocks) An hour later and anxious to get back to the house for the transformation, we headed out.

Back at the house, we set up mirrors side by side, plugged in a huge spotlight so we could see and unwrapped and organized all of Karen's purchases. The way I teach is hands on. We sat side by side, clean faced and armed with tools. I did my makeup right along with her showing how to do each step. I actually drew a face on a piece of paper and we labeled it as we went, paint by numbers style. If she does it herself, she'll get a better feel for how to do it. Today's lesson was a more natural approach but can be made more dramatic if necessary. We actually ended up doing a total eyebrow reshaping mid makeup which made a huge difference in the shape of her eyes.

After about a 45 minute lesson....this was the final result!

She looks absolutely stunning and she did it all with her own hands and little guidance! It was a perfect morning! She is going to try and recreate the look tonight before she goes out. It was so much fun and I can't wait to find my next willing victim!

Make it a beautiful Saturday!

Here's What You Need To Know...

Welcome to my blog!

Why I Love To Share...
For as long as I can remember my friends have always asked me for advice, tips, tricks and help when it comes to all things health and beauty. I am a self professed product junkie and love sharing what I know. For me, playing with makeup, hair and fashion is not just for the sake of looking good, it's like a hobby. I feel like I've tested every product, been every hair color and tried a lot of fashions, good and bad. It so fun to see the transformation that can happen with myself and even more so on my willing victims!

How I Got To Be This Way...
I have a very beautiful and well dressed Mama. She's always been that way. She trained me well. (Thanks Mama!) Growing up she always made sure I was pulled together. I was a little chubby growing up and let's face it...kids can be mean. It gave me A LOT of self esteem issues that I still have to stifle today. It's that little voice inside. The one that says "You're not supposed to have to lay down to button your pants. Put the cookie down fatso". I like to call her my "Inner Mean Girl". She is a total brat and can wreck a perfectly good day. Luckily, living a little life, getting a little older and coming into my own I've learned to shut her up pretty quickly. To be confident, you have to convince yourself before anyone else will believe it. I live by the motto "fake it til you make it". Sounds silly but it works and let's face it, for most of us confidence takes some work and a little duct tape over the mouth of our "Inner Mean Girl".

Pride in Ownership...
So I am the girl that ALWAYS does her hair and makeup before going out in public, even the gym and yes I would before going to mailbox if it wasn't on my porch. Does that make me "high maintenance"? NO WAY! I hate when someone says you're "high maintenance" or "conceited" because you take the time to make yourself look nice. Granted, there are people that deserve those titles. I don't think that being someone who cares about their appearance automatically makes you one of them.  I like to call it "pride in ownership". If I feel better about myself, I am going to put my best foot forward in all that I do.

What I Have Up My Sleeve...

I will be sharing LOTS of things with you from this point on. I love learning new ways to do things and I also love a bargain. So everything that I share with you will be easy to do and affordable. Love that! I will also post photos, videos and reviews of products as much as I can.

In my everyday life I am an On-Air Personality. I co-host a morning radio show on 98.7 Wink Country and a mid-day show on 103.7 KNE FM. I am also a Zumba instructor. So from time to time I may mix in some fitness things and sneak in a little music stuff too. All things that make life better, right?

If you every have questions, please feel free to contact me.
