I always get asked how I know so much about health and beauty. Well basically, it's due to trial and error. I have been wearing makeup and doing my own hair/coloring it since I was about 14. Which means I've had some time to make mistakes and also discover a lot of helpful tips.
Here are the "Top 10 Mistakes and Fixes" I've discovered over time...
1. Washing your hair too much: You should not wash your hair every single day. You strip the natural oils from hair causing it to dry out. For someone like me with color treated hair, especially red, this also causes your color to not last as long. If you can hold off, do it every other day. Dry shampoo is an awesome hair product to extend the time between. Usually it's an aerosol spray, the texture is almost a like powder. You spray it at your roots and rub it in. It absorbs the excess oil and gives your hair more volume. By the way, you can use baby powder too.
2. Using too much conditioner: You don't need to apply conditioner to your entire head. It will weigh your hair down and cause it not to style as well. Think about it this way, the hair closest to your head is the new growth, it's healthy. The rest is probably damaged to some degree. Conditioner should be applied from the ear line down. Like if you made a ponytail, from that point to the ends.
3. Perfume application: Perfume is made for your skin not your clothes. Let it get on your skin so that it mixes with your body heat. Spray on pulse points. Don't spray it on your clothes, it can ruin the fabric. You may not notice it right away but once you wash and dry your clothes it can actually set it in. Also, have you ever seen someone spray their wrists and then rub them together? DON'T do that. You break up the molecular structure of the perfume by rubbing it.
4. Over-washing your face: You really should only wash your face before bed. Washing it too much can strip your skin of natural, necessary oils. A toner works well to refresh your skin.
5. Moisturizing before foundation: You SHOULD put on moisturizer before you put on your foundation BUT make sure you let it soak in. If you don't, it cuts back on the coverage and can make your foundation slide around on your skin. Wait about 60 seconds between. If you can't wait, dab your skin with a tissue.
6. Too much blush: Cheeks so bright you could be a parrot on a pirate's shoulder? If it's powder blush, take a little face powder and blend it out. If it's cream blush, put a little bit of foundation on a sponge and tone it down.
7. Eyeshadow spread: Sometimes when you put on eyeshadow the color will end up under your eyes. You can either hold a tissue on your cheek right under your eye or put some loose powder under your eye. Leave it loose, don't blend it in. When you're done, brush it away. Also, if you get a little eyeshadow or mascara where it doesn't belong, take a q-tip and put it on the spot, then twist it.
8. Plucking your eyebrows: First don't over-pluck them. If you are apprehensive about doing it, go to a professional. If you want to do it yourself, there are stencil kits available that provide a guideline. Also, don't pluck up close in a mirror. Use a bigger mirror and step back so you see the bigger picture. (I will be doing an eyebrow tutorial soon!)
9. Lipstick on your teeth: After you put on your lipstick, take a clean index finger, put your finger in your mouth, wrap your lips around your finger and slowly pull it out. Any excess that made its way inside your mouth will come off on your finger.
10. Forgetting to clean your makeup brushes: They will harbor bacteria from use and then you do nothing but spread that to your skin if you don't keep them clean. Which in turn can cause acne, which will mean you use more makeup to cover it up. Vicious cycle. Wash brushes at least every 2 weeks.
If the whole world of hair and makeup is somewhat new to you, you will make mistakes. Hopefully I can help you avoid some of them along the way. If you ever have a question, you can always ask me. I will do my best to help you avoid any beauty blunders I can.
Have a beautiful night!
